Drying printed circuit boards and electronic components

During the manufacture of printed circuit boards the products are cut and drilled to accommodate the necessary electronic components. Following this each board must be washed to remove swarf and dust particles which can interfere with the effective operation of the PCB. The boards also go through numerous chemical baths during the production process and need to be dried fully to prevent malfunction. The same is also true of adapters and electronic components which flow through a chemical bath before drying. 

Historically, the PCBs and adapters are manually placed on a drying rack and left to dry naturally. Alternatively, the PCBs pass through an oven to 'bake'. Both methods present problems; firstly, natural drying methods are time consuming and labour intensive and often leave unsightly streaks on the finished components. The baking methods exposes the PCB to very high heat levels which can damage the connections and components.

The natural solutions is to employ an air knife drying system to remove the excess moisture while the PCB or components pass along the conveyor, significantly reducing the labour and time required for drying. Using air knives prior to the oven also reduces the exposure time of the PCB to high temperatures, removing the risk of damage.
